Subject
Food
Description
Love2Give is an NGO based in Kayamandi that runs a food gardening programme as part of its activities.
Its food garden is tended by women from the township, who often have come from the Eastern Cape with knowledge of subsistence farming, but with few other skills. The food garden allows them the opportunity to practise their agricultural skills, while the NGO also teaches additional skill-building activities through sewing and computer lessons.
In the food garden a variety of vegetables are grown, all of which are distributed among the participants to use or sell, or for use in the on-site crèche kitchen. The programme also encourages the participants to grow vegetables at home, and facilitates this through the provision of seedlings and compost.
