Description

Mama Swartbooi is one of the oldest residents of Kayamandi and is also well known for her cooking.

Her house is situated on Swartbooi Street, named after her husband’s family. She is one of the first residents in Kayamandi to have opened up her home to tourists and visitors who wanted to experience Xhosa cuisine. Part of the homestay programme, Mama Swartbooi’s house has become both a home for many international volunteers spending a few weeks in Kayamandi and a ‘restaurant’ for foreign visitors seeking an authentic food experience in the township.

Every week, Mama Swartbooi caters by appointment for visitor groups that she hosts in her home. Inviting foreigners into her home was difficult at first, but she now enjoys telling stories about her heritage and life in Kayamandi while they enjoy her home-cooked meals.
