These hostels were built by Stellenbosch Farmer’s Winery (now Distell) for single male labourers residing in Kayamandi. Their design is unique and different to the typical rectangular design of most other hostels. Each hostel is circular in construction with individual sleeping quarters leading into a central and shared living and cooking space. Over the years, these hostels have fell into disarray, as male residents have moved out in search of accommodation better suited to their families. The hostels remain as an architectural testament to the era of hostel living in the township of Kayamandi.
