Description
Description
The Old Beer Hall in Kayamandi was opened in 1962, and was also known as “118”, being the 118th building to be erected in the township. The Old Beer Hall served as a government-designated space where male labourers could purchase and consume alcohol. Some activist groups managed to arrange meetings there, although this was difficult at times, being under close watch.
The Old Beer Hall became a contested site of both activism and municipal oppression. In the 1980s and early 90s, students and school children targeted the delivery vehicles at the Old Beer Hall and used guerrilla tactics to demand better access to education. Shortly after Chris Hani’s assassination in 1993, the Old Beer Hall was vandalised by the community in protest.
Sometime thereafter, the Greater Stellenbosch Development Trust decided to purchase and renovate the building. It is now home to a community centre and function venue called Amazink, which hosts regular township theatre events. To see what’s on, visit their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/amazinklive/
