Description
Jan Viviers and his family were Kayamandi’s first non-black residents.
In the audio clip below, Jan explains the initial reasoning for wanting to move to Kayamandi, which started in 1985, during apartheid’s most violent period.
When they eventually made the decision to move to the township in 1998, it was no longer necessarily a solidarity move, but rather an expression of wanting to give back to society, knowing that they had benefited from the previous system. He felt that by living in Kayamandi, as opposed to doing projects, for example, they could make a meaningful contribution to the lives of township residents.
Jan was one of the pioneers of tourism in Kayamandi and has made significant contributions to the development of the local tourism economy. His wife, Karin, in her time in Kayamandi established and managed several orphanages and coordinated volunteer and charity projects.
Almost 20 years later, the family has made Kayamandi their home, and they have made lasting friendships that challenge racial and class boundaries.
